FAQ

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?
Behavior analysis is the science of behavior. Its underlying philosophy is behaviorism, which is based upon the premise that attempting to improve the human condition through behavior change (e.g., education, behavioral health treatment) will be most effective if observable behavior is the primary focus, rather than less tangible concepts such as the mind and willpower.
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has been empirically shown to be effective in a wide variety of areas, including parent training, substance abuse treatment, dementia management, brain injury rehabilitation, occupational safety intervention, among others. However, because ABA was first applied to the treatment of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism, this practice area has the largest evidence base and has received the most recognition. 1

What does therapy look like?
ABA services look different for each individual. Services can be administered while seated at a table, while playing on the floor, or even while out in the community. Most services will incorporate different teaching formats and procedures to help your child learn including, but not limited to, discrete trial training (DTT), natural environment teaching (NET), or modeling.

All behavior analytic programming will utilize evidence-based practices to help your child acquire new skills and to help reduce the occurrence of aberrant behavior. BCBA Consultants will use data-based decision making to develop changes to your child's programming to ensure your child is learning efficiently and successfully.

How many hours of ABA services will my child receive?
Service delivery varies from one individual to the next. The National Research Council recommends 25 hours per week of ABA services 2 , however that is not always necessary and, in some cases, more hours may be recommended. The service delivery schedule will be determined by the BCBA Consultant and parents based on the needs of the child. Please see the " Our Services " page for additional information regarding types of services offered at Steps to Success Consultants, LLC.

Who will be providing therapy to my child?
At Steps to Success Consultants, LLC, we typically provide a tiered approach to services in some cases, but not all. Typically, a BCBA Consultant will oversee assessment, program development, behavior intervention planning, as well as monitor progress. RBT Associate provider(s) will work directly with your child to implement behavior analytic services; RBT Associate providers are supervised on a weekly basis by the BCBA Consultant. In some cases, Steps to Success Consultants, LLC chooses to have the BCBA Consultant work directly with your child. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.

What Does It All Mean?
Behavior analytic terminology can be very confusing for individuals not trained in the field. The BCBA Consultants and Steps to Success Consultants, LLC recognize that this jargon is like a whole new language to some people and strive to explain things in a manner than can be understood by anyone. That being said, sometimes things are still just a bit too confusing. Let your BCBA Consultant know that you are unaware of the meaning of a term and they will be happy to explain and define the term to the best of their ability or, if you'd like to learn more, ask them for educational resources to help you learn more about the topic!
